Premier Li Keqiang met with Margaret Chan, former director-general of the World Health Organization on July 27 in Beijing.

Premier Li praised Chan’s efforts in safeguarding global health security and promoting the development of the health sector during her term of office. She promptly tackled public health emergencies including the ebola fever, promoted health system construction in member countries, especially developing countries and offered advice and support on China’s healthcare reform, the Premier said.

Premier Li said China is striving to solve the worldwide problem of healthcare reform, saying that the basic healthcare system should be a public product provided to everyone.

China has worked hard to build the world’s largest basic healthcare network which now covers 98 percent of the public, benefiting 1.3 billion Chinese people, Premier Li said.

China will continue to push its Healthy China plan and is willing to strengthen exchanges with international partners, such as the WHO, to implement the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Chan said she was grateful for the Chinese government’s long-term support of the WHO. She said China’s achievements in healthcare reform are widely recognized and serve as a good example for other countries.

Chan said she hopes to use her professional expertise and continue to support China’s healthcare reforms and cooperation with the international community.
